What to Pack, Anticipate, and Wear When Going to Rehab

DISCLAIMER: Every rehabilitation retreat around the world is different. They have different rules, environments, etc. Information within this article was gathered from a small sample of some different people that have been through rehab in the United States. Just consider it some helpful hints from some helpful insiders. Wardrobe Wire is not an expert on every rehab retreat. Please keep the above in mind, and try to take this lightheartedly.

Most likely, the rehabilitation center will have a website that will have guidelines as to what to pack and expect. But, Wardrobe Wire always likes to bend rules from time to time just to spice things up a little.  Follow their guidelines, but don’t be scared to still look nice there. Feel free to get dressed up, do your hair, and make up.  It is important that you feel yourself and sometimes, in events like this, that little boost of confidence can only help you.  Never be above “getting ready." As they say, “ no matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up.

Towels are often provided at the place of rehabilitation, but we HIGHLY recommend that you bring your own. One or two full body towels, a hand towel, and a wash cloth will make your stay more comfortable. Chances are you will likely be there for 28 days. You can feel good knowing that you are the only person to have touched these towels. Little extra touches, like this, help to make your stay feel more like home.

Check to see if there is a workout facility. If so, definitely bring some workout clothes. Even if you are not one to workout, you will have some free time on your hands and why not work on your physical health while there too? Mind. Body. Soul. Plus, when you look good, you feel good. Why not turn this experience into one that will make you proud?

For facilities in warmer climates, you may be told to only bring a one piece bathing suit. Bring a bikini if you feel comfortable in one, though. Tan lines may get ugly after 28 days. Men, you might be told to leave your bikini trunks at home. We actually agree with them on this one!

Wardrobe specifics are going to depend on climate, of course. Some people will spend all day in their PJ’s and never get ready for the day. Wardrobe Wire NEVER recommends such a practice. Sometimes baby steps in life, like getting ready for it, are HUGE. It feels good to wake up and get ready. Bring your favorite pair of jeans that almost feel like your PJ bottoms, but are much more presentable. Pair it with a comfortable top that always makes you feel attractive.

Some basics to think about packing (although some may be provided, these are just things to think about).

1. A hair brush and any hair products including a blow dryer that you can’t live without. MAKE SURE the products are alcohol free.

2. Pictures. You may get home sick and miss friends, family, or pets. Pictures will remind you of what is waiting for you and your healthy recovery.

3. Your favorite and most comfortable pair of pajamas. Often there will be “movie nights”.  Get comfortable so you can just crawl into bed afterwards. We would recommend sexy lingerie, but apparently that is DEEPLY frowned upon if not completely prohibited. Who would of thunk it?

4. Any beauty or hygiene products that you can’t be without. MAKE SURE that they are alcohol free.

5. Sunglasses. You may find yourself sitting outside A LOT chatting with the other clients.  This may be the extent of your social life and, actually, chatting with the other clients can be the best therapy. If you don’t have sunglasses, bring a hat.

6. A watch. You may find yourself staring at it all day long. Plus, you will have to keep track of a lot meetings and appointments. We don’t recommend your finest watch, however. Hate to say it, but you can’t trust everyone. Leave your jewelry at home, too. Sometimes they have “open door policies” and do not lock anything up. Just play it safe.

7. Ladies, chances are that nail polish remover is not welcomed (due to the fact that it has alcohol in it). So, if your nails are freshly painted, the polish will get chipped and start annoying you. We recommend going au natural. Groom them up before you go, put on a clear base coat, and call it a day.

8. Ladies, you may want to bring an oversized scarf that you can toss loosely around your neck to spice up an outfit. Plus, you can cuddle with it ☺

9. A bandana or scarf to tie around your head could also be helpful. It will keep your hair back and out of your face, and it adds a little character.

10. In a nutshell, try and keep it as minimalist as possible.

If anyone has any other helpful hints for people, let us know. Most importantly, take advantage of this amazing opportunity to get well. Good luck!

The darkest hour of the night comes right before the dawn, so just keep on pressin' on.
