Read: Conservative! First ask yourself the basic questions: What time of year is it? Where is the event- indoors or outdoors? Is it a formal or semi-formal venue?
You can’t go wrong with a nice pair of dress slacks, a skinny belt, and a cute blouse. Some of the bigger charity events are very formal and a dress is expected. The invitation should indicate the dress code.
Here is a cheat sheet to help you decipher any code:
Formal or black tie: floor length evening gowns. Men should wear tuxedos. Check out these places for help finding your perfect gown. They are listed from most reasonably priced to most expensive:
Semi Formal: a dress is still necessary, but it does not need to be floor length. You probably don’t want to go with a micro mini either. Men wear a suit and tie. Here are some great places to shop for semi-formal attire: (listed from most reasonably priced to most expensive):
Business Casual or Smart: No jeans, no clubbing gear, but certainly not formal. Ladies should choose a nice pair of slacks, khakis, or even a pencil skirt paired with a button up or sweater. Men can wear a suit without a tie, slacks and a collared shirt or sports coat. Think: Banana Republic, Talbot’s, Club Monaco, Theory, Laundry, DKNY, Ann Taylor, Hugo Boss and, of course, your favorite department store.
p.s. We suggest eating before the event, because food at charity events is not usually that satisfying!
