Graduation is an important event because it marks a major milestone in one’s life and offers an opportunity for friends and loved ones to celebrate the graduate’s achievements. While graduation parties and post-graduation festivities (e.g. Grad Bash) tend to be casual, the actual graduation ceremony calls for both graduates and guests to dress somewhat conservatively.
What should SHE wear? Whether you are the one graduating or just a guest attending the graduation, it is important to dress for comfort because you will be sitting or standing for an extended period of time. A cotton, knee-length dress or skirt is appropriate, as well as cotton (or wool depending on time of year) slacks. It is not necessary to wear a button up shirt (unless it’s your style), but a great blouse or pretty top will work well. If it’s warm, a simple sleeveless top will do. For the graduate, a great pair of shoes is always a good touch. Your outfit will be covered up most of the time by the cap and gown (until the after party), so why not have your shoes make a statement all on their own? Again, remember to make sure your shoes will be comfortable. If you’re most comfortable strutting around in high heels, more power to you!
What should HE wear? Be comfortable. We aren’t saying throw on jeans and t-shirt, but a nice pair of casual cotton slacks (khaki, navy, black) and a collared button up shirt or polo type shirt will do just fine. Compliment it with a nice pair of loafers or casual dress shoes, and you are ready to go! Everyone has their own style. It’s your day, so whatever you do, own it and make it you! Don’t forget your camera!
