- The Homecoming dance is a fun celebration that occurs in the beginning of the school year and is most often associated with the Homecoming football game. Therefore, the attire for this party is usually semi-formal. At most schools, the athletes who will participate in Homecoming games are encouraged by their coaches to dress up the day of Homecoming – either in their football jersey and slacks or in a button-down shirt, tie, and freshly-pressed slacks. More often than not, all students are expected to dress up for the occasion to support the spirit of their school.
What should SHE wear? It is not necessary to wear a floor length gown for a semi-formal event. A great party dress that is knee length or shorter is perfect for Homecoming. It can be slim-fitting or A-line with a strapless, one shoulder, halter, or sweetheart neckline. The more detail the better, so don’t forget to add a dangly earring that is fun and flirty or a stylish necklace with a big stone. You should keep jewelry minimal, though, if your dress is patterned, beaded ,or has a lot of intricate details. Shoes should be strappy and really compliment the color of the dress. Ladies can either wear their hair somewhat casually or in an up-do. Try to stay away from a bun unless you’re going for a school marm or young librarian look. Hairstyle and teen magazines often have a lot of great ideas for semi-formal looks, most of which come with basic instructions to achieve the look. Don’t be afraid to try something new!
What should HE wear? Being that this is a more casual event, a button-down shirt, tie, and a pair of freshly-pressed slacks are really all that is necessary. If you enjoy getting more dressed-up, wear a simple dark-colored suit. Preferred colors for a suit are black, navy, or chocolate brown. It is always nice to coordinate specific details of your ensemble (e.g. the color of your shirt and/or tie) with the color of your date’s dress. Add a unique watch or cufflinks to accentuate your outfit in a subtle way. If you want to be especially suave, wear a pocket square or handkerchief in the chest pocket of your jacket. Additionally, don’t forget the corsage. Make sure to find out what kind of dress she is wearing before ordering the flower. She may prefer a wrist corsage to a pinned flower depending on the style of her dress. Most importantly, have fun!
