What to Wear to a Football Game

It’s football season! I 'm sure you all know this because every guy on Facebook is updating their status about their "fantasies." Men, especially, are digging through their closets in search of their lucky team shirt (most likely it's in awful shape, has many nasty stains on it, and some awful story to go along with each stain). Football games are a classic tradition that many attend faithfully every year to support their favorite teams and athletes. A sport that is always played outside on a football field means you must be prepared when attending. The football season begins in late summer and ends in early winter.  Therefore, as the games progress, you must be properly dressed for possible inclement weather.

What should SHE wear? Football games are one of the most casual of sports, so leave the heels at home. You never know who you'll meet when you leave your house or where you'll meet them.... so DO get ready for even an event as casual as a football game. Often football games are like mini reunions, you will want to look your best for your old college buddies. After all, you're a Wardrobe Wire Girl! A comfortable pair of denim leggings, cotton t-shirt with the colors of your team, and your favorite TOMS shoes, sandals, Converse, moccasins, or boots is a simple option. Remember that you might be climbing steps, tailgating for hours, walking far distances, and climbing bleachers, so make sure that your shoes are comfortable and practical. Bring a sweater or sweatshirt with you in case you get cold. If it’s really cold outside, make sure to wear a cold weather jacket, gloves, and maybe a scarf (striped with your team colors) because you will be sitting outside for an extended period of time. In the Midwest and East, you will definitely want to curl up in a big blanket with your team logo on it (and make out with your significant other underneath it during "The Sin Period"...err, half time).

What should HE wear? Wardrobe Wire wants you to look better than all the other men at the game, so listen closely. You can't go wrong with your basic polo or sweatshirt with your team colors on it (or even the team logo). Pair it with jeans or slacks and clean white tennis shoes or TOMS Shoes. Leave the team jerseys for the kids and the players on the field. If you really want to dress to impress and be different than all the slobs.... wear a team sweater or a spin off of an old letterman's sweater. After all, retro is in style! A team jersey does NOT say sophistication. Don’t forget a hat to shield you from the sun and a jacket and gloves if the weather is chilly. Just PLEASE make sure that the hat is not a helmet with a beer holder on top. Instead, opt for a vintage beanie, aka skull cap, in your school colors. In the 1940's, these beanies were very popular. Of course, men, you all know that the 40's are back! One more tip for the guys...NO face paint.

Bottom line: If you're going to pull for a winning team, you better look like a winner, too! Check out the gallery for some examples.

In my opinion, any man who has a CAREER (not a job) has no business wearing a jersey. Are you collecting a paycheck from the NFL? I think the appropriate way for a man to represent their team is team colors or a team logo t-shirt or polo. Leave the jerseys to the players on the field or better yet, buy a jersey for the kiddies and take them to the game and lay off the booze. At a 2010 Packers/Cardinals football game I saw the most debonair gentleman wearing a Kelly Green long sleeve button down shirt with a lemon yellow cable knit sweater vest over it and a pair of classic straight cut dark wash jeans, his salt and pepper hair was his perfect accessory. I wanted to jump his bones right there in the stadium. He was GQ chic all the way!

I agree with Paige. A hat works well if you're outside tailgating. Unfortunately I've seen a lot of what-not-to-wear at games as well... Think painted beer belly.

Typically you want to wear jeans or a casual slack on bottom and on top wear something that represents the team you are cheering for! I have included some photos. Go Sun Devils! In the east and midwest it gets VERY cold and you may need to bring gloves and/or a hat.
