What to Wear to the Kentucky Derby

For many of us, the Kentucky Derby is the perfect stage to play the role of a southern belle straight off the plantation. The more mint julep one drinks, the thicker the fake accent becomes.

The most important part of your outfit, ladies, is your hat. I know you have heard this before, but here is a reminder: the bigger the better! Make sure you wear your hat with a tilt. You can only begin to plan your outfit once your hat is purchased. The hats are said to bring good luck, and it has been a tradition since the derby started. There is no significant reason why they wear hats other than when the derby first began, it was the fashion to wear these big fancy hats. Thus, it became a tradition.

Like any “sporting” event ,you will see people in blue jeans, but we don’t recommend it. For many, it is only once a year that we can dress up this way. Most men will be wearing suits. So, we recommend women wear a dress that goes with their hat.

You will be doing a lot of walking, so stilettos may not be a good idea. Some very wise women will put a pair of flip flops in their purse just in case. You may need them for a far walk, if you are getting blisters, or if it starts raining. You certainly don't want to ruin a new, beautiful, and expensive pair of shoes because of nasty weather.

Springtime weather in Kentucky can be unpredictable. Check the weather forecast, and be prepared for the worst. Umbrellas are NOT allowed. So, if need be, you may want to purchase a disposable poncho that you can roll up and toss in your purse just in case. If the forecast calls for sunny skies, make sure you bring a tube of sunscreen!

Also, if you are planning on going out to dinner afterward, note that the restaurant may not want you wearing your hat. If this is the case, be prepared. Stock your purse with a comb and some hairspray. Maybe even consider a scarf to help disguise your hat hair.

P.S. Be prepared to mingle amongst royalty, politicians, celebrities, and southern gents and gems.
