We tend to forget what Memorial Day is all about. We forget it isn’t about a paid day off work, but truly is designed as a day of remembrance for our fallen soldiers.
According to General Order No. 11 given by General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic on May 5, 1868:
"The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit."
But even on a day of remembrance and honor, we need to know what to wear! Think Americana and Classic! Seersucker and linen are great for keeping you cool, as well as cotton. Do not get all over the top fancy with your leather hot pants and silk tops. Grandpa and dad will surely have heart attacks! White is a beautiful color for this day, but just remember to be very, very careful with that barbeque sauce! I would suggest navy or red linen pants or shorts and red, white, or blue tissue thin cotton tank or tee. Throw on a few gold bangles, and you’re appropriate no matter where you end up. Pairing navy and red with gold is hot! But there is no need to sport the Red, White, and Blue tee from your local Walgreen’s covered in stars and stripes. Just say no!
If you are looking for something less traditional, try one of spring’s playsuits or rompers. Or, choose a sundress in floral or maybe blue and white, but keep it just at or 2-3 inches above the knee. Just double check on the wind status! There is nothing more annoying than trying to constantly hold down your skirt!
If you’re in a location where the weather is a bit cooler, a floral top with jeans will look great! You can bring a cardigan to protect you from the chill as the sun goes down.
