What to Wear to a Job Interview

Clip This

This is easy, yet critically important! It’s your time to make a great impression!

For a job interview, you want to look your best without overdoing it. Be shower fresh, with your hair dry and styled, and do not drench yourself in cologne or perfume. A polished, well-groomed, and manicured look is a must! Check your teeth, nails, and don’t forget deodorant. Avoid flashy nail polish or chipped nails.

What to wear can vary by type of job and industry, but as a rule, a good suit is a no-fail for both men and women. For women, a skirt or pant suit in a nice cut and neutral color is almost always ideal. To be professional, this should be paired with a crisp button up top, low heeled conservative shoes, and minimal jewelry.

In creative or fashion environments, you can swap the button up for a pretty camisole or even a starched crewneck basic. Dresses can be appropriate for interviews as well, but always go with a conservative and classy style. Avoid showing too much skin, too high of a heel, and anything bold or loud. Save your love of fashion until after you’ve been hired!

Men, the same rules apply to you in general. Be sure to add nice leather dress shoes, a belt, and great tie!
For both genders, no jeans! Tote your resume in a leather folder or attaché. Briefcases are generally too formal in this environment. Stick with a nice leather case or handbag instead. Take a note book along to jot down notes during the meeting – it’ll be useful and impressive!

Does wearing a suit hold true for interviews in small towns? Is it possible they may see you as overdressed?
