What to Wear/Not Wear When Working as a Server

Clip This

Even though most restaurants and bars have SOME sort of dress code for their staff, there are a few things that I can’t stand from someone that is serving me.

Your cell phone on your belt loop. Unless you're in construction, no one should wear their phones. You shouldn’t be answering your phone or texting when working, anyway. Plus, it is just an eye sore and tasteless. Don’t make me lose my appetite.

Diner hair. If I’m eating at an “up scale” restaurant and someone is serving me with 1980s bangs, I just might vomit on the person next to me.

Gaudy jewelry, especially necklaces that look like tire chains or rings with skulls on them. Dining is as much about ambiance as it is good food. Your jewelry should not be an eye sore.

Caked on eye makeup that makes me think it’s Halloween. I’d like to be able to look you in the eye when ordering without the fear that you’re putting a spell on me.

DO NOT drench yourself in perfume or cologne. You want a tip instead a ball of snot on your face from making your customers sneeze.

Please don’t serve me if you have dirt under your nails or chipped nail polish. I don’t want any of them ending up in my food. I also don’t want to see rhinestones on your nails for the same reason (and that is just ugly anyway).

Iron your shirt! It is very important to be neatly pressed.

No food stains on your shirt!

No body odor. No bad breath.

Bottom line: less is more in this case. If I’m paying upscale prices, I better get upscale servers.
