What to Wear to The GRAMMYs

Rihanna, Madonna, Britney...and you! So you may not have been nominated for a Grammy, but you’re still going to the awards show! Please let us know if you have extra tickets, because we would love to join you! For the fortunate few who receive the opportunity to attend this once a year event, this is your moment to dress to impress. Although it is not a formal event, you will want to wear up-to-date clothing that is stylish, trendy, and flattering. You may be seen on television when sashaying down the red carpet or while in the audience, therefore it is best to purchase a new outfit for this event.

What to wear for women: It is not necessary to wear a floor length gown if you are not an award winner. Yet, it is okay to wear a long, loose flowing dress that is stylish and sexy (halter, sweetheart neck, or strapless). A short party dress would work well or a hip pantsuit or trendy slacks (paper bag waist or high waist) and a skinny tank. This is the event to pile on the jewelry and accessories and wear your sexiest and/or highest pair of shoes. Remember, you can be caught on camera at any moment!

What to wear for men: This is the event to step outside of your comfort zone and put on an ultra stylish outfit. You will definitely need to go shopping for this one. When doing so, look for a dress pant that is out of the ordinary. Perhaps a dark pant in a slimmer fit, paired with trendy boots or dress shoes, a sleek designer dress shirt, and a stylish jacket. Add accessories like a nice watch and/or bracelets, a scarf, stylish belt, and a hat. Mix and match to see what looks best and what you would be happy to see yourself in on television!  Spice up your look with a funky pocket square, tie bar, and flower or pin in your lapel.

Color is popular this year so don'e be scared to break away from your all black!  Events like these are meant for you to break out of your comfort zone and stand out as opposed to blend in like normally.  Musicians are creative and they will be dressed funky and fashion forward.  Don't worry about being safe.  Worry about being FUN!

@dkdm- as far as accessories are concerned, I'd try and keep them feminine and dainty to go along with your dress. Chandelier earrings are popular again as seen on the red carpet at the Golden Globe awards. I'd opt for a crystal or something that matches the beading in your dress. If you wear a dangly earring perhaps avoid wearing a necklace in order to make your neck look longer OR wear a pearl choker a la Princess Diana. Skip a bracelet and wear a ring on each ring finger (diamond preferably). Here are some links to check out: (these are just examples as you can always find cheaper in stores like Dillard's that has a HUGE selection for affordable prices).

@Amanda- you definitely can wear a long and funky Sue Wong dress. Events like this allow you to break out of your comfort zone and stand out as opposed to blend in. Post a picture!

@dkdm- Looks pretty from what I can tell! You can't go wrong with a metallic strappy heel, but a blush toned shoe would also work (as it looks the dress has some undertones). If you could find something with a pearl affect that could be cool. Please avoid a white satin heel that you'd find in a bridal shop! I attached some images to give you some ideas. So we bought the package to go to the Grammy's at a fundraising event. We are working with limited info on what to expect. I live in Denver and our shopping options are limited. I found an awesome Sue Wong long funky dress. Is that inappropriate? I'm beginning to panic that I'll look ridiculous. One of the above comments said if you're not a performer, nominee or presenter, wear cocktail. I have friends that have attended the Grammy's and Emmy's and they said for sure wear long.

Please Help! I'm down to the wire now!!

thanks for the feedback. i did in fact find a dress which the description is "a pattern of beads and sequins reflects the lights as it textures a strapless chiffon-overlaid party dress." i think what makes it age appropriate for me is the dress falls just above the knee (yay!). the beading is silvery and sequins are light colored. i've attached a pic of the beading/sequins. i'm olive skin tone with black hair. can you recommend accessories and shoe type? thanks so much for your help.

dkdm- you don't have to wear sequins, but you still want to at least wear cocktail attire. Like I said, the Grammy's are fun, the music industry is funky, so you will see everything from leather to feathers to next to nothing. That said, you do want to dress age appropriate and not try to look like something you're not. Wear a dress you look and feel good in and spice it up with some costume jewelry or a funky purse.

Pink- You can't go wrong with a tux, but most attendees at the grammy's dress a little more funky because that's just how the industry is in general. If you opt for a tux make it look more "cool" by wearing a white bow tie a la Robert Downey Jr., or a skinny tie, or cool pin in your lapel. Check out this article on how to stand out in your tuxedo: http://www.wardrobewire.com/channel/stylist/article/just-men/how-stand-o...

If you don't want to wear a tuxedo, as the event isn't THAT formal, you can spice up your suit with a colorful pocket square, tie bar, or put a brooch on your lapel a la Kayne West.

Make sure you wear a pair of new shoes or at least ones that are polished.

I was planning to wear my regular black tux with funky tie. Too boring? How about a dark suit, blue w/pinstripe? I'm 50 and a lawyer, so not planning to wear sequins and cowboy books. Any thoughts on this?

We are going as spectators and will be sitting with the rest world who is not a celebrity of some sort, or, in the industry. Do you still recommend the same attire? We are a middle aged couple and don't want to under dress or over dress. Thanks for your help.

I have been to the Grammy's several times and anything goes! No one wears a long formal dress unless your a nominee, presenter, or performer. Cute cocktail dress is perfect. I think the majority of attendees will be in glitter/sequins this year...it's super trendy right now.

I absolutely think you can wear a glittery gold cocktail dress! The Grammy's are fun and not as formal as some other award shows, like the Oscars. Feel free to submit a photo before hand!
