So, it’s summer time and that means one thing...music festivals. I personally think the best one is Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee, but I’m biased because it’s the first one I’ve attended. It’s a four day, outdoor, music festival in mid-June that celebrates music, art, environmentalism, friendship, and much more.
The first thing to expect at Bonnaroo is heat. It’s the middle of summer in Tennessee, so it’s near 100-degree heat the whole time you are there. Shade and breeze are hot commodities that don’t come by often (so fully embrace them when they do). Bring sunglasses, an e-z-up, umbrella, wide-brimmed hat, and motorized, hand fan. These will be your lifesavers.
Next, you are parked neck-to-neck to people, and you’ll be living and sleeping next to them for four days. Get to know your neighbors. They can become great friends and help you out in a tight situation, like when your car battery dies or you run out of propane for your grill. Probably you will also go see the shows with them, too.
Water is another precious commodity. Camelbaks are your best friend. Invest in one. YOU WILL NEED IT.
Pace yourself throughout the day. I learned the hard way that if you are out in the sun too long, you won’t make it to the awesome night shows. Those bands are typically the ones you want to see, too. Go to the ones during the day that are truly important to you and wait to check out the bands that you like or are somewhat interested in at night.
What to wear? As little as possible! Cut-off shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, swimsuits, sandals, and rain boots. You will get a lot of sun, so be leery of tan lines. A cute vest with a bikini top, shorts, and boots with a hat is a great way to stay cool and cute. Try to stay away from heavy fabrics like denim and wool. Instead, wear cotton and linen. Tall boots are not necessary since it’s deathly hot. Short boots, though, are a necessity, since there will be mud you’ll have to walk through. I do not recommend going barefoot for these reasons: diseases, fungi, or you just could get hurt.
Just remember to have fun, enjoy the four days you have off from work, and make friends and great memories.
