The Question

Would it be appropriate to wear big, Tanika Ray/ Tracee Ellis Ross hair with a sweetheart shape strapless dress?

The Occasions

Farewell/Prom, Matric

The Note

I am currently in Grade 12 (South Africa), which is the final grade in the high school sytem. We have an event called Matric Farewell, which is sort of like prom, but exclusive to only the grade 12s in the school. My farewell is next week and I have no Idea what hair to wear! I have a round shaped face and my dress is a strapless figure hugging dress. I have checked most red carpet hair-dos and I am yet to see a celebrity sporting the Aretha Franklin curls with a long strapless dress. This event is a once in a lifetime event, and I definately want to look spectacular. I am 18 years old, so I do want something 'age appropriate'.

I'm not sure how long your hair is - but like Kristina mentioned - adding curls WILL shorten the length of your hair and shorter hair does not always look good on a round face. I would suggest trying out the style you want a few days in advance, put your dress on, and have someone take pictures. This will give you a better idea of your overall look. As Kristina and Paige both said - whatever you choose - as long as YOU feel amazing and confident - people will definitely take notice! Please send us pictures - we can't wait to see!!!

I love curls! This is how I wear my hair most of the time because its cute, easy to style and very versitile. I think it would be very style appropriate to wear your hair in big curls. This is a style you can easliy do if you dont want to spend the money and go to a stylist. All you need is settting lotion, rollers, dryer, and a comb. There are lots of how to videos on youtube and search rollersets.Or you can go to a salon, but make sure you bring a picture of the style you want. Also a hair pin, or flower would be a good way to accessorize your hair and complete the look. Also remember that curly hair appear to be shorter than your actual hair lenght. So if you want to retain length or have longer curls adding a couple of extensions in the back is quick and easy. But most of all have fun girl! And whatever you decided to wear, make sure you wear it with confidence! That is the most important accessory!

In my opinion your hair-do does not have to coordinate with your dress. It's more about what looks good with your face shape. I think soft curls worn down would look great. You could then pull part of the side back and put something with an embellishment in it. I'd try to avoid going too over the top so your hair does not take away from your beautiful eyes. This is an important event and years down the road you want to look back at photos and not think " what on earth was I thinking"! What ever you choose OWN IT! Send us pictures!
