The latest trend for spring/summer 09 is the distressed jean. Seen on every starlet in fashion and Hollywood from Rhianna and Cameron Diaz to Justin Timberlake Many of us will jump for joy because we can now pull out all of the old tattered jeans we saved for yard work and combine them with the latest Alexander Wang racer back tank and YSL heels. Others, may be slightly confused that ripped and shredded jeans were ever really a fashion statement, and not just the result of too many wears and washes in the machine. Either way, this is THE trend of the season and can cost you next to nothing or upwards of $900.
This style was originally seen on the spring runways from high end designers like Balmain and Dsquared. I, personally, can’t fathom the idea of spending any amount of money on a pair of jeans that I could easily just bend over in or do a karate kick and rip myself…. but to each his or her own. This style is not just limited to women either, yet may be a cheaper alternative for men because we know you all wear your jeans until the holes are so big a small grapefruit could fit through. So guys, grab those former “Saturday yard-work” jeans and pair them up with a sheer thermal from Rick Owens and a nice pair of Toms or Comme Des Garcon tennis shoes.
The distressed denim trend won’t work for everyone. It is a youthful trend that we would limit to men and women between the ages of 15 and 35. Most of the distressed denim styles we are seeing in stores and magazines are a skinny, boot cut or straight leg fit, therefore it would look best on a leaner body type. For women, you can find the distressed jean from brands like Citizens of Humanity at around $198 or the more affordable alternative from Forever 21 at just $33. Great brands for men are AG jeans, which will cost you around $265 and an affordable alternative from American Eagle will set you back at around $40 a pair.
Is this trend here to stay? Probably. I mean- did it ever go out of style?
