Oversized tops are back again in a big way! With a myriad of styles, cuts and shapes to choose from, this is one trend that is here for the long haul. After spending the summer in bikini’s, I am sure we are all looking forward to being able to breathe a little easier and let it all hang out! If worn correctly, this look can be extremely pretty and feminine, but make sure to adhere to the rules; if paired with the wrong item of clothing, this style can look frumpy and lazy. The oversized look is also being called the boyfriend look. “Boyfriend blazers” and “boyfriend cardigans” are showing up everywhere. This trend can be very inexpensive to achieve. If the latest Diane Von Furstenberg oversized blazer is not in your budget, then raid your boyfriends closet! Woman are actually taking their boyfriends sweaters, blazers and shirts and pairing them with their own clothes.
When wearing this look, it’s key to make sure you don’t oversize all over. This can lead to making you look a size or two larger than what you really are and let’s face it….no one really wants that! Pair your top with leggings or a fitted mini skirt. If you’re wearing denim on the bottom, make sure to wear a skinny fit or straight leg style to avoid looking unpolished or frumpy. Oversized T’s and thin sweaters look great belted, and the boyfriend blazer adds a simplistic style to any outfit with the sleeves pushed up and a casual tank underneath. The boyfriend sweater can be chic, sophisticated and sexy with a mini skirt and stilettos. Perfect for those end of summer nights! One of our favorite looks is pairing a sequined skirt with a solid color boyfriend cardigan over it. It tones down the sequins a bit making it wearable for both day and night.
To achieve this look, scour your local vintage shops and hip boutiques. American Rag in Los Angeles, Intermix and any major department store, such as Barneys or Bloomingdales will have everything you need to locate the perfect oversized top.
