Wardrobe Wire: We have to imagine, as a woman and former supermodel, breaking into the DJ world was groundbreaking and tough. Can you share any experiences that reminded you of how much harder you had it than a man?
Sky: Hah, for every single female DJ there must be 1000 males… so you do the math! It was hard, like wanting to become a female sushi chef or striving to becoming the president of the USA... slight exaggeration, but you feel me right? Why women in any profession are considered second class is beyond me. No one in the industry wanted me to become what I am today and probably are still hating. Hate on, Haters! Haha
Wardrobe Wire: To clarify for the haters, who REALLY was your teacher and inspiration for making a "master of music" your profession?
Sky: The only inspiration was the amazing artists that I have to privilege of playing... the music I love and adore.
Wardrobe Wire: As a world traveler, do you have any packing tips and/or tricks to share with the WW community that will help us all pack stylishly, but still light and efficient?
Sky: I start with the shoes. I pick a pair that will function in any situation and I work from there up!
Wardrobe Wire: Of all destinations, in the world , you have traveled to… is there one in particular that has a unique sense of style that you’d like to see replicated in the USA?
Sky: There are too many to name, lets just start with Europe: Italy, France and the UK, could teach American's so much about quality, elegance and style.
Wardrobe Wire: Which destination (no matter how big or small) do you think has the most fashion forward sense of style?
Sky: London wins hand down.
Wardrobe Wire: Are there any worldly traditions or customs that have influenced your sense of style or that you respect/appreciate the most?
Sky: After my first trip to Japan, I became obsessed with the Kimono's and tea ceremonies. Today, I make tea in one of my many kimono's whenever I am home… fact !
Wardrobe Wire: They say, “when you look good you feel good”. On days you don’t feel so good, what do you do to change that?
Sky: I take a long bath, but if that’s not an option… I request any and all caffeinated drinks.
Wardrobe Wire: We know who inspired you to become a DJ, but when it comes to fashion, who and what inspires you?
Sky: The weather, the dress code for the evening and, ultimately, my choice of shoes. Most of which can be found on Wardrobe Wire!
Wardrobe Wire: How has your fashion changed, if at all, from when you were living the life of a supermodel to a DJ?
Sky:Well you can't DJ is just anything (e.g. couture). Comfort comes first, no sleeves, and definitely not heels that I can't jump around in for at least 3hrs! However, I did somehow manage to function in an eight inch platform heel care of Louis Vuitton …. Thank goodness I was DJing on a carpet surface!
Wardrobe Wire: Having to travel to several different destinations in the world in one week how do you stay organized, healthy, fashionable, and sane?
Sky: I
always check the weather forecast and I don’t check luggage (if
avoidable). So again, I start with my shoes and accessories. I then build a small, compact, interchangeable wardrobe. Also, I take wellness formulas, vitamins, and TONS of green tea! When all else fails.... I go
shopping!
Wardrobe Wire: Does what you wear during a gig relate to the destination you are in
and/or the type of gig it is for?
Sky: Always! It's my job to look the part and, luckily, designers and clients love to dress me for their events… such a bonus!
Wardrobe Wire: What products must you carry in your purse, at all times, besides pepper spray?
Sky: Lip gloss, mascara, and the correct currency of the country I am in.
Wardrobe Wire: Any emerging designers you MUST inform the Wardrobe Wire community about?
Sky: Well, I'm currently obsessed with Ports 1961. Their show at Bryant Park just blew me away… I'm living for everything they make, true art!!!!
