The Question

I have a holiday dinner party at the Harvard Club http://www.hcny.com/ after work on Tuesday - there will be wives there that are regularly featured in the style section, get written up in Vogue and W and some mega wealth attending - however, i get to change in the bathroom at my office 5 minutes before it's time to go...what do i wear remembering that this is a corporate hedge fund event but also a holiday party...oh and I have to carry my outfit with me to the office that morning. I'm leaning towards a black prada slip dress...any interesting suggestions?

There are a million ways you can make that dress look different every time you wear it! LIke Tanisha said, statement jewelry is the easiest ( Banana Republic has some great, affordable statement jewelry in right now). You can put all the pieces in a bag in your purse and carry it to work with you. Do your makeup stronger than usual in the morning so all you really have to do is touch up a little- maybe just darken the liner and add another coat of mascara ( or try falsies- my favorite!)

Remember- just because someone has money and/or went to Harvard DOES NOT mean they have style or are any more fashion forward than the rest of us! Often it is the opposite.

Another idea to separate yourself from the bunch and stand out is to throw a faux fur coat or stole over the dress. This look is really in style and gives you an instant "rich" look. Another idea is to purchase some black, leather elbow length gloves that you can wear through the night. Talk about sophistication!

Well, I am assuming you live in NY...so it's cold. Whichever coat you wear to work that day...make sure its appropriate to wear over your dress as well..(I would go for a simple black pea coat or a black 3/4 length coat in wool, satin or heavy cotton). Corporate and holiday means classy and chic with flair! The black Prada slip dress sounds great as its easy to transport from home to office and won't take up a lot of room but its also very simple and if you want to fit in nicely with woman who are regularly featured in Vogue and W, I would definitely spice it up a bit! Therefore, make sure to pile on the jewels- big chunky or layered necklaces, earings, bold rings and chunky bracelets, (the more sparkle the better- diamonds, pearls, costume jewlery, whatever!) and wear a pair of killer heels.
